Staging…

Staging Leadership…

Ever heard of it?

Let me start with an explanation of staging. Thank you, Wikipedia:

Home staging is the preparation of a private residence for sale in the real estate marketplace. The goal of staging is to make a home appealing to the highest number of potential buyers, thereby selling a property more swiftly and for more money. Staging techniques focus on improving a property’s appeal by ensuring it is a welcoming, attractive product that any buyer can see himself/herself living in and, thus, desire to purchase.

Tomorrow our realtor is coming to our home to take pictures to send to a potential buyer. My husband and I have been preparing for this for months.  We have decluttered, deep cleaned, painted, got a new roof, and completed several additional repairs. While those things have a big part to play, tomorrow is where the magic is supposed to happen. It’s staging day! Think Joanna Gaines from Fixer Upper. The furniture must be positioned perfectly. The lighting has got to be bright and homey. Oh, and the most important part–the prospective buyer needs to be able to imagine themselves cozy and happy in our home—now that’s one tall order! So, everything needs to be perfectly organized all the while having plants, pillows, placemats, rugs, candles, and freshly baked goodies, and anything else Pinterest tells me, precisely placed in the perfect spot.

At this point, I’m so over it I just want to say, “here it is and if you don’t like it, it’s just fine!”

What does home staging have to do with leadership?

If you search Google, YouTube, or any podcast platform you will find thousands of articles and books, audios, and videos sharing experts’ thoughts on how to be a great leader. I have always loved attending conferences. I would take tons of notes, attend all the breakout sessions, and listen intently to the successful leaders on the stage. Then, I would come home to do a remodel and staging event on my personal leadership style. If I could just be like ___________ then, I would be successful. Most of the time their ideas didn’t feel like me and no changes were made. So there was rarely a return on investing the time and money to attend the conference.

So how do we grow and develop as leaders without getting frustrated and say, “here I am and if you don’t like it, it’s just fine.”

At LEADERSHIPTEN, we believe the way to become the best leader we can be, is to begin by knowing ourselves and leading ourselves. At L10, this is where we always begin when developing leaders.

The first thing we do is provide tools to help the leader get a clear picture of their core values, behavioral style, emotional intelligence, energy givers and drainers, and key motivators. We also encourage them to determine their own definitions of success and leadership.

What does this have to do with being a good leader?

When a leader knows

What success looks like

What being a leader means to them

Why do they behave the way they do

How they behave in different types of situations

How emotionally resilient they are

Where their energy comes from and the areas that drain their energy

THEN they can begin to stage their leadership style in a way that’s true to themselves, keeps them from burning out, and sets the example for other leaders to follow.
